September is National Preparedness Month.
Practicing your preparedness plans starts at home, and that includes your pets. When an emergency happens, stress and panic can make it hard to think clearly for us. Imagine how that feels for your animals. That is why having a plan and practicing it makes all the difference in a real disaster.
- Here are some steps to get started:
Plan where you will go. Identify at least two places outside your immediate area where you and your pets can go. Think about a family member’s house, a pet-friendly hotel, or a designated shelter that allows animals. - Write it down. Do not rely on memory. Use Ready.gov’s free fillable family plan and add a page for your animals with vet contact info, medications, diet notes, and a current photo of you together. This can help prove ownership if you are separated.
